As I (metaphorically) pen the next few installments of ‘Deeper Realms’ and tinker with the seven books of the ‘Unnatural History Museum,’ I find myself wondering where my work will go – and what form it will ultimately take.
As noted in a previous post, the path I have found myself on is far from the one I originally intended to take when I first started jotting scenes of a military adventure set in Republican Rome, shortly after my first degree. My aim of creating big, realistic, immersive historical fiction still remains, but I’ve gained more pleasure and flexibility from the slide into classic science fiction and time travel, which at times seems to be careering dangerously close to magical realism.
Though I have many diverse ideas (and even writing styles) I have set myself the task of creating one coherent world, in which my various characters live and act – possibly across decades and generations – with concepts and plots hanging together as a coherent whole. So though, as yet, little has been revealed about the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of the time travel in my stories, the principles and realities of my imaginary world are absolute across the various characters and tales I write. I’m also very keen to write a ‘reverse engineered’ time travel novel in which a seeming historical novel morphs into something more sci-fi as the protagonists in the past realise that there are “people from the future” among them – but that is all to come.
As ever, I am left fascinated by the world, time and space, by the vastness of reality, by the diversity of nature and human culture, and ultimately I find myself desperate to explore and explain the things which excite my curiosity; from the weird extinct creatures which roamed the earth after the disappearance of the dinosaurs (only 30% of earth’s mega-
fauna survived into the present age) to the rich detail of the daily lives of ancient Romans, and I’m keen to take my characters to ever more diverse arenas.
So whatever happens next it will be eclectic … exciting, thought-provoking and eclectic. So stay tuned, as they say, you might just lean something.

Great and intriguing news. A "coherent world over generations" will be a challenge...
